There are many reasons for doing legal pro bono. Some are about the clients. Some are about the causes. Some are about it just being the right thing to do.
An often overlooked reason is that it makes business sense: A active pro bono practice can improve legal skills; provide matters of responsibility for junior lawyers; and assist in trainee recruitment. It can demonstrate a firm’s corporate social responsibility credentials; attract value-matched clients; and open the firm up to new international markets. These reasons do not detract from the altruism of legal pro bono; rather, they complement it.
Advocates for International Development (A4ID) and Lawworks both help lawyers to provide impactful pro bono work, both here and abroad. As part of Pro Bono Week, we are proud to co-host this event on “The Business Case for Pro Bono”, that will discuss:
1) The core business reasons for engaging in legal pro bono;
2) How to align a firm’s business strategy and its pro bono practice;
3) How to develop a strategic pro bono practice.
Confirmed speakers include:
Amy Grunske (née Heading), Head of International Pro Bono and Community Responsibility, Orrick
Rob Powell, Head of Pro Bono and CSR, London, Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP
James Sandbach, Director of Policy and External Affairs, Lawworks
Toby Collis, Learning and Development Manager, A4ID (moderating)
